On June 1, chairman of the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, customs service Colonel-General Safar Mehdiyev met with the delegation led by executive director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan Natevan Mammadova.
Chairman of the State Customs Committee Safar Mehdiyev expressed satisfaction with the cooperation and development of mutual relations between American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan and customs bodies. Mentioning meetings held with the leadership of the State Customs Committee and Chamber members Safar Mehdiyev underlined that the Committee attached great importance to the cooperation in all spheres of customs system.
Speaking about the reforms carried out in the country under the leadership of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, development of non-oil sector and increase of export potential, chairman of the State Customs Committee also touched on the work done to improve the custom system, reforms carried out in this sphere, impact of these measures on the improvement of trade environment.
Information was also given about the facilitation of check of import-export operations as a result of the recent reforms carried out in Azerbaijan's customs system, measures taken to adjust customs system to the international standards.
Safar Mehdiyev said that in accordance with the "Rules of using Green Corridor and other systems for taking goods and transport vehicles through the customs border" confirmed under the relevant decree of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, currently, the participants of foreign economic activity gained an opportunity to use Green Corridor system. It was said that with the view of facilitating customs check, ensuring transparency and minimizing contact of customs officers and citizens, use of information technologies had become widespread and the number of services provided by the State Customs Committee via E-Government Portal had been increased.
Underlining that Azerbaijan's Customs Service was always ready to cooperate with businesses to ensure the country's economic security, develop entrepreneurship and improve business environment, chairman of the State Customs Committee said cooperation with the American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan was a vivid example of this. Safar Mehdiyev also said that efforts were being made to adjust the customs system to the international standards, increase efficiency of customs service. Underlining that the leadership of the State Customs Committee was interested in ensuring full transparency in the customs system, chairman of the Committee said both AMCHAM member companies and other consulting companies would be able to conduct monitoring of Azerbaijani customs system.
Safar Mehdiyev said despite awareness-raising activities carried out among the participants of foreign economic activity, numerous attempts were still made to smuggle goods into the country and to present fake documents during customs inspection of imported goods. Chairman of the Committee said relevant measures would be taken to prevent such cases.
Executive director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan Natevan Mammadova said they attached great importance to the cooperation with Azerbaijan's Customs Service, stressed the significance of mutual activity for deepening the relations. Executive director said AMCHAM highly appreciated efforts of the State Customs Committee in deepening customs-business cooperation.
Satisfied with the principled position of the State Customs Committee on fight against customs offences, smuggling of counterfeit and fake goods, Natevan Mammadova said joint activity of all relevant bodies was necessary to solve the problem. She said American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan was ready to support the State Customs Committee in certain spheres.
A number of issues of mutual interest were discussed during the meeting.
