State Customs Committee starts applying blockchain technology

On June 14, State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan joined TradeLens supply chain platform based on the blockchain technology jointly worked out by Maersk and IBM companies.

A meeting was held on the sidelines of the World Customs Organization's Information Technologies and Technological Innovations Conference and Exhibition in Baku.

Addressing the meeting, deputy chairman of the State Customs Committee, customs service Major-General Igbal Babayev said Azerbaijan's customs service attached special importance to the application of information technologies. It has worked out and is implementing innovative projects for this purpose. It was said that joining the TradeLens is expected to increase efficiency and ensuring better safety of the import and export operations of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In order to accept and use more actively the TradeLens with the view of increasing efforts regarded digitalization, the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan starts cooperating with the numerous government agencies all over the world.

Azerbaijan's Customs Service is carrying out reforms in all aspects regarding customs clearance and using innovative technologies to reach the goal. One of the major goals of the Committee is to fully automate the process of customs clearance. TradeLens is a big supply chain platform and is turning into a reliable platform for the interested parties on the trade sector.

By using TradeLens the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan will get more detailed information about the content of the containers moving on TradeLens ecosystem and the sides taking part in the process. This allows assessing the risks on transportation in a more effective manner, accelerating the process of customs clearance, simplifying costly commitments for those engaged in trade and facilitating the regional trade process.

"In the entire world the customs bodies play an important role in the process of transporting goods from one point to another in a normal manner," said TradeLens Authorities Lead Norbert Kouwenhoven. He said that in the modern world lack of data flow poses risks for the process of checking deliveries and it is necessary to make significant amendments with this regard. The State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan is increasing efforts towards trade digitalization and we regard it as important to work jointly.

Then, the sides signed a document on admission of the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the TradeLens. The document was signed by deputy chairman of the State Customs Committee Igbal Babayev and TradeLens Authorities Lead Norbert Kouwenhoven.

It should be noted that the TradeLens platform was jointly worked out by Maersk and IBM. TradeLens is an open and neutral industrial platform fixed with blockchain technology and supported by big companies on the international transportation sector. The platform ensures effective, transparent and safe exchange of information with view of establishing more successful cooperation and increasing reliability.
